Traditional marketing is any type of marketing that’s done without an online outlet, whereas digital marketing is done completely online. Because we live in a digital world, digital marketing is the most effective form of marketing for the majority of businesses. Digital marketing allows you to reach the biggest audience possible, but does that mean that traditional marketing is unsuccessful?
This isn’t true, as many forms of traditional marketing are just as successful as digital marketing. Some of the most effective digital marketing strategies are social media marketing, email marketing, affiliate marketing, and search engine optimization (SEO). Here’s a look at some of the most effective types of traditional marketing strategies.
Table of Contents
#1: Billboards
Billboards are huge ads that are usually found along highways and interstates, but they can also be found along the streets of cities and towns (though not as big). They’re usually direct and easy to read because people are driving when they see them. Some of the most common types of businesses that advertise on billboards are personal injury law firms because their target audience is made up of people who have been in car accidents— and the placement of the billboards helps with their marketing.
#2: Commercials
TV and radio commercials are also very popular forms of traditional marketing. Even with more people streaming their TV shows and radio stations, ads can still be used across these platforms. This type of marketing, known as broadcasting, is effective because it’s repetitive. TV and radio commercials also typically have jingles or mottos to help people remember the company.
Keep in mind that ads on streaming services are known as online ads, which technically make this digital marketing since you need the internet to stream these services. Still, commercials on TV and radio, whether they’re accessed through the internet or not, are great ways to advertise.

#3: Events
Hosting or attending an event is a great way to market and interact with your current and potential customers/clients and also network with other business owners. Look into attending events like seminars, conferences, conventions, or pop-up shops, which tend to be very popular. Pop-up shops allow you to showcase your products to current and potential customers, all while also allowing you to interact with customers and other business owners. There are also many different strategies you can use to advertise events, including:
- Using the FOMO (fear of missing out) tactic
- Provide live-streaming options
- Promotion through social media, emails, and other forms of digital marketing
- Promoting them through traditional marketing by creating advertising materials
- Partnering with other businesses
- Offer incentives, such as discounts
- Inviting influential people to the event
- Creating a website for the event
#4: Printed Ads and Documents
Print probably seems like the least effective way to market your business, but this method is still widely used. Examples of printed ads and documents include:
- Newspapers and magazines
- Flyers
- Direct mail
- Brochures
Digital media hasn’t completely taken over print media, as many people consume both forms daily.
#5: Promotional Items
Promotional items are clothing, drinkware, collectibles, and other items that bear the name and logo of a company. These items are typically given away as prizes at events or as a free gift with purchase (GWP). Hats, T-shirts, keychains, and coffee mugs are some of the most popular promotional items, and just about any type of business can benefit from having these. Of course, you’ll have better luck with items that relate to your business, such as
- Water bottles, shaker bottles, and microfiber towels if you’re a fitness or sporting business
- Shot glasses, coasters, and aprons if your business is in the food and drink industry
- Bumper stickers and license plate frames if you’re a part of the automotive industry
Traditional marketing shouldn’t be ruled out, no matter what type of business you have. In fact, up-and-coming small businesses and local businesses may benefit from traditional marketing strategies more than digital marketing strategies in the beginning. At the beginning of your business career, your target audience is going to be those in your local community, and traditional marketing tactics are going to be the most effective. Once your business begins to grow, digital marketing tactics are going to be more effective and you’ll use these methods more often.
Because both traditional and digital marketing are effective ways to market, using a combination of both types of marketing is a great route to take when advertising your business. You may never stop using traditional marketing methods completely unless they prove to be costing you more money.
